  4. Another excerpt from Whedonesque's very long topic, again by thier member TamaraC:

Asked about a Buffy Musical on Broadway, Joss didn't rule it out. Asked if they would participate most of the panel indicated that they would. Sarah was not among them. She was more like, "No way", but laughingly.

Asked about a Buffy movie, Joss also did not rule that out. He said that if he had the chance to work with the cast again that he would without question throw the comic book stuff out the window if there was a continuity or canon issue. I'm paraphrasing here. See above about being an idiot and not taking notes. Both things sounded like nice pipe dreams and/or musings without any substance around them whatsoever, just to be clear.

Marti said she was going to be directing a movie but didn't mention any of the whats or whos. Anyone know anything? Joss never mentioned Dollhouse or Firefly which I was actually pleased about. This was a Buffy panel and I am very glad that they were focused enough to stay in that realm.

  5. From Whedonesque, (TamaraC):

Marti did an introduction. She is adorable. Then they played OMWF. After the guests were introduced one at a time. David, Amber, Seth, Charisma, Michelle, Marti, James, Nick, Sarah, Joss.

No reason was given for Alyson and Eliza not showing.

I was kind of engrossed and completely forgot to take notes. I am so sorry.

Roush obviously loves the show and loves the cast, but he had absolutely no control over the panel as moderator. IMO, the panel was way too large. Annoyingly so.

I would have much rather it been two hours with Joss and Sarah and I am not a SMG fan. It was impossible to give everyone the time they should have had and Nick's ADD was very apparent.

Seth had several brilliant one liners but Charisma and Amber seemed to get shorted on time and attention because they weren't hammy and pushy.

Joss called Sarah Jimmy Stewart. Very amusing. He gave her credit for inspiring him to make the first scene in The Body sans music. She also got high praise from David for her work ethic and ability to take in every note and every direction and execute flawlessly.

The Jimmy Stewart thing is a reference to how she can show pain like he did. He said that he used to call her that. It was news to her.

She just found out about the events in Buffy Season 8 #12 five minutes before the panel. Amber talked about how important and wonderful it was to get to play her role and how Willow/Tara were portrayed. Some fan asked her about her not appearing in season 7. It was very accusatory. She rambled around and said it just didn't work out but the fact that they got to tell the Willow/Tara story was the important part to remember.

I really wish they wouldn't allow fans to ask questions at these things. The questions are embarrassing for the audience, uncomfortable for the crowd, or really not questions. The last question of the night was some random chick stating that she didn't have a question but rambled on for three minutes about how much she loved the show. Get.A.Blog. Total waste of an opportunity and the audience's (and panel's) time.

On a more positive note, Sarah talked about how it is so much more important that BtVS has the reputation and fans that it does and than having tons of awards. She felt at the time that the viewer awards meant a lot more anyway. She was (to me) surprisingly gushy and positive and loving in the way she talked about the show. She definitely changed my assumptions about her. I was very impressed.

James talked eloquently about how hard and terrifying OMWF was. My memory sucks. Michelle said that she developed psychosomatic laryngitis because she was so scared.

Charisma was asked whether she thought it was a good move for her to go to Angel. She told the story of Joss asking her to go for a walk with him. Others cringed in sympathy. Seth said that some never come back from that walk. First off, Joss said she was fired. Obviously form a story Marti told, this is Joss' little evil joke that he plays on lots of folk. I laughed.

Charisma's first question to Joss once he pitched her going to Angel was "what if it doesn't go?" and Joss said she would always have a safety net on Buffy. David said that there would have been no Angel without Charisma. She was needed for balance. He was all heartfelt about it and sweet. It was a nice moment.

All eleven of them answered a question from a fan on what their favorite movie is and what is on their iPod. Once again, Get.A.Blog. The answers took forever and the panel totally lost focus and really, it just wasn't that interesting. David's favorite movie? Tie between Serenity and Godfather. I couldn't tell if his tongue was firmly planted in his cheek or not. He also said that he wasn't working and would follow Joss anywhere. Marti also said that if Joss told her that he was building a rocket and they were all going to Mars she would say, "Ok, when do we leave."

  6. - Eliza Dushku and Alyson Hannigan were not present

    - Nicolas Brendon's A.D.D was apparently, apparent. But he was pleasant nonetheless

    - They discussed "pretty standard stuff" such as: The Body, Tara's death, Hush, Willow & Tara's relationship

    - The moderator mentioned the Buffy/Satsu tryst from the latest issue of Season 8, and Sarah said that she'd "found out 5 minutes ago", and the first thing she thought of was Willow! Then filled in James Marsters about the new development in Buffy's love life.

    - James asked if he was in the comics

    - Oz has been confirmed to return in Season 8, possibly to further his characters development in an arc

    - Sarah said she was proud "Smashed" made it to the top of Entertainment Weekly's list of sex scenes.

    - Discussing the episode "The Body", Joss mentioned that he used to call Sarah Michelle Gellar "Jimmy", unbeknownst to her. Nicolas Brendon thought the nickname came from her bone structure...

    - James didn't talk as much as Sarah, Joss and Seth Green, but there was one stand out moment at the end when they were talking about their projects and James said that he'd just gotten back from Dragonball. Someone shouted out "Smallville!" and someone else (myself) yelled out "Torchwood" and then finally someone yelled out that they were going to his concert and he responded "Oh MUSIC!!!" and cheered for the fact, and started talking about how he finally has some good musicians!

    - David Boreanaz did not make a commentary video, and was not present

    - Joss claimed that a film would be green-lit if "the stars aligned". Seth Green exclaimed "That question will get you shot!"

    - Seth Green was awesome

    - Charisma Carpenter, Seth Green and Amber Benson joked about making a line of exercise videos that were a mix of Tae-Bo, strip aerobics and kick-boxing, "you know a sort of sexy violence thing?"

    - Emma Caulfield discussed her monologue from "The Body". She said that a couple of days ago she was asked about that scene, specifically what she was thinking at the time she was filming it. She replied that she was really thinking that she was "hungry and she had to go pee...and that every one was hungry and Joss was like "More tears, no less tears, now only one!" and she finally exclaimed: "What? Why I don't understand?!" (exactly as Anya said it) and Joss said "That's it!"

    - Michelle Trachtenberg talked about the fact that Joss actually wrote dialogue for her scene in "The Body" where she finds out about Joyce.

    - And that she was the only one not in the special features of the dvd, because she was bawling her eyes out because she had to sing on the set of "Once More, With Feeling" resulting in psychosomatic tonsillitis!

    - When asked what they missed most about working on the show, Joss said that he missed the writer's room, Seth said he missed David Boreanaz "taking a poop in his trailer before he even got in it in the morning", Emma said that she missed scrabble, and that sort of digressed into a whole scrabble conversation

    - Joss had just returned from shooting a piece with Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day, called Dr. Horrible

    - Tom Lenk was in the audience

  7. Go to Jossd.com!

The recording is kind of ear-aching with all of Tabitha's screaming, but still worthwhile.

  8. According to Shiai of SlayerLit.us, it has been announced there WILL be a DVD.

However, no one is allowed to purchase it until I have. Got it?! There better be some in stock. LOL.

  9. Could the Season Eight comics become non-canon?

    From SlayAlive.com

http://www.thefutoncritic.com/rant.aspx?id=20080320 (Down to where it says 8:34, site wont let copy/paste)

Just to get another discussion because they are fun, how do people feel about Joss saying, if there were to be a movie, he'd be willing to shoot down the comics if there was a canon/continuity problem?

I was kind of shocked when I read it. I mean, Season 8 is a HUGE project. Joss and others are putting a lot of hard work into the series. If there were to be a movie, I don't see why it can't just take place after Season 8 and 9, instead of just ignoring them completely, or maybe even between 8 and 9.

And here's a "what if" questions:

Joss announces he is going to make a movie and all of the cast is returning, BUT he says the comics wont exist anymore. Which would you want more? A live-action Buffy movie or Season 8/9 comics?

Although I'm liking the comics, I'd be willing to ignore them for a movie. I mean, they will still be there to read and stuff, but they are not canon.

  10. Exclusive Tidbit from Brian Lynch

BAF-Authors: Why did you choose to have Spike After the Fall a separate comic

book instead of just adding on to Angel After the Fall like it is being done for first night?

BL: The reason it's not being added to ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL is because it jumps back to the beginning of our characters' times in hell, and I think Angel's story in ATF, after the rewinding we do for a short time in FIRST NIGHT, should continue to move forward. It's all building towards something, and to jump back in time again would work against that purpose.

    Hey everyone,

I wanted to let you know that at the beginning of next week (probably Monday) we will publish the newest issue of Slayage, which we have been working on for quite some time. It is a special issue devoted to Firefly / Serenity, edited by Tanya Cochran and me. I think the essays are really good (yes, I know I'm prejudiced). Anyway, I hope some of you will take a look.

  17. HarvardIndependent. com Review

The eighth season of Joss Whedon’s acclaimed Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, in comic book form, is rather like a second helping of dessert on a full stomach: immediately gratifying, but probably not such a great idea in hindsight.

After Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Whedon’s televised opus on feminism and growth as seen through a supernatural lens, concluded its seventh and final season in 2003, fans of the show were forced to wait patiently until March of last year for a legitimate continuation of the narrative. Produced and written by Joss Whedon with the help of guest writers, season eight of i>Buffy the Vampire Slayer picks up where season seven left off. The only problem: season seven didn’t leave very much to be picked up.

“Chosen,” the last episode of season seven, proved to be a beautiful and extremely well done ending to a show so fiercely loved by so many. As emotionally and intellectually satisfying endings are wont to do, “Chosen” brought a satisfactory resolution to the overarching issue moving the series while still leaving a (literal) road ahead for the characters to travel in the imagination of the reader.

By continuing the series, the message of such a strong resolution gets diluted. At the end of “Chosen,” Buffy Summers, the protagonist, makes the decision to overthrow the archaic patriarchal control over her life by working to share her power. The montage of girls and women all over the world, scared and beaten, rising up and making a stand against the backdrop of Buffy’s voice calmly asking, “Are you ready to be strong?” may be one of the most moving scenes in television history.

Yet, its effect is weakened, even distorted, when the eighth season in comic book form takes this metaphor for feminism and turns it into an abuse of power. Instead of staying strong and cohesive in the eighth season, slayers split up, rob banks, and kill each other off for fear of competition.

Because the eighth season was forced to continue from a series whose primary conflict had resolved, it had no choice but to pretend otherwise in order to keep the storyline going. Although the last scene of the last episode was of Buffy, surrounded by close friends and family, finally coming to grips with the fact that she was no longer alone, the eighth season does it best to continue an internal conflict that, for all intents and purposes, was already terminated. After having alienated her best friend for a very vague and unclear reason, Buffy has a conversation with Xander, another close companion, about the loneliness of leadership and power (both of which should have been moot points post-“Chosen”) .

Many facets of the narrative in the eighth season of Buffy appear unintentionally vague, incomprehensible or unclear, not because of poor writing (what blasphemy it is to ever consider Joss Whedon and poor writing in the same context) but because of the change in medium. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was originally written for television. It was slotted roughly 40 to 45 minutes of time every week, a barely satisfactory amount of time to tell such an intricately crafted story. The eighth season isn’t allowed a fraction of that. A new comic, approximately 22 pages, is released once every month, and so great plot leaps must be made with each issue.

Although the comic book format allows for fewer restrictions to imaginative and innovative storytelling (many things can be drawn which, due to budget constraints or otherwise, cannot be viewed on a screen), it doesn’t have the immediacy of a television episode. As a comic book fan myself, it must be made clear that this is not a diatribe against any particular form of storytelling. There’s a very big difference between watching a 100-pound girl getting her ass kicked by a 400-pound demon on the screen, hearing every punch and watching every whimper, and glancing quickly at six panels of the fight on a page. Because it began and ended within a televised context, Buffy doesn’t carry quite as well over to the colored and paneled comic book page.

The comic book form does lend itself to one kind of storyline that television couldn’t spare the viewing time to do very well — that of the extremely minor and marginalized characters. When dealing with tales of epic proportions, humanity, and the balance of the universe in the hands of a select few, it is often best to leave out how the decisions of such great heroes and villains could affect the lives of less significant characters. The eighth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer allots room for these minor characters, and the effect of such carefully crafted side tales proves more devastating and fulfilling than the primary storyline.

“The Chain,” the one-issue story of a nameless slayer’s death after she takes on the responsibility of being Buffy’s decoy, was Whedon’s writing and comic format at its best, creating webs of complex and intellectually stimulating meaning out of a few pages of little dialogue and a few snapshot images.

“The Chain” takes the personal and places it in a multi-structural universal, one where the metaphor is not only one of feminism but of war, of social duty, and of internal values pitched against an unmoving external reality as well. It’s the story of an ordinary girl, one you may have passed on the street without thinking twice about, and how she grew up, how she established an identity, accepted the responsibility that came with power, and saved the world along the way. That is what Buffy the Vampire Slayer is about.

In all honesty, for all its flaws, the eighth season of Buffy has proved tremendously successful because, for some die hard Whedon fans (myself very much included), all of these points prove moot against the deafening logic of one rallying cry. Stomachache be damned! Keep that sweet, sweet dessert coming!

I posted a page from the "Wesley" story below, and now here is a page each from "Lorne" (art by John Byrne, colors by Len O'Grady) and Spike (art by David Messina, our original Angel and Spike artist, colors by Ilaria Traversi). The latest issue of Wizard magazine has an interview with Joss.

WIZARD: ... it was mentioned... that this run could go as long as 40 or 50 issues. What's the status?

JOSS: The status is that we've got it planned to exactly 40. We know almost every bit of who's doing what and the main points of what we need to hit, where it's going, what it means, what the big climax is, who the villain is, and mostly who the writers are for each bit.

    WIZARD: Will it end there?

JOSS: No, no, no. The last two arcs will be plotted out by me and Brad Meltzer. And he's going to write the first one, I'm gonna write the second one. #40 will be the final issue of "Season 8" and that will be absolutely the end of it until the beginning of "Season 9."
